Why MEP Consultants?
November 10, 2022
Building a home is a dream for every family, but improper electrical planning can affect comfort, safety, and long-term usability. Lighting and socket layouts must be planned carefully to ensure easy operation, energy efficiency, and zero wall breaking after plastering.
At Genius Engineering Solutions, MEP Consultants in Kerala, we help homeowners design practical, safe, and future-ready electrical systems tailored for modern residential living.
Start with the Right Design Sequence
A successful electrical design always follows this sequence:
First, finalize the architectural drawings.
Next, finalize the furniture layout.
Then finalize the false ceiling design.
After that, plan lighting, switch, and socket points aligned with furniture positions.
Locate the Distribution Board (DB) in a safe, accessible, and convenient area.
This approach avoids rework and ensures smooth daily operation.
Lighting & Socket Planning – Area by Area
🚗 Car Porch and Sit-out
The car porch should have at least two LED lights for proper illumination. Considering the increasing use of electric vehicles in Kerala, two dedicated EV charging points should be provided here:
- One charging point for an electric car
- One charging point for an electric scooter
Both chargers must be on separate protected circuits with proper MCB/RCCB protection.
The sit-out should have a ceiling light and a wall light for aesthetics, with two-way control from the sit-out and living room.
🛋️ Living Room and Family Living
The living room typically requires 4–6 LED downlights along with a decorative ceiling light. The family living area generally houses the TV unit, so power, data, and DTH points should be grouped neatly.
- Dedicated socket point for Split AC unit in the living room
- 6A socket for ROBO cleaner in the living or common area for automated cleaning convenience
🍽️ Dining Room and Kitchen
Dining areas work best with a pendant light above the dining table and additional LED lights for ambient lighting.
- Dedicated socket point for Split AC unit in the dining area (if AC-conditioned)
In the kitchen, lighting should focus on functionality. Ceiling lights, under-cabinet task lighting, and exhaust fan points are essential. Socket points must align with appliances such as refrigerators, microwave ovens, and mixers to avoid visible wiring later.
🧺 Work Area and Staircase
The work or utility area should include proper lighting, a fan, and socket points for washing machines and ironing.
Staircase lighting must be designed with two-way switching at the bottom and top, ensuring safety and ease of use during night-time movement.
🛏️ Bedrooms and Study Rooms
Bedrooms should be planned for comfort and convenience:
- Central ceiling light and ceiling fan
- Bedside reading lights
- Foot lights for night movement
- Dedicated socket point for Split AC unit in every bedroom
- Split AC ON/OFF control provided near the bedside, ensuring comfort without getting up
Two-way switching for bedroom lights and fans (near the door and bedside) is essential.
Study rooms require focused task lighting, multiple sockets for laptops and printers, and a data point.
🚿 Toilets and Bathrooms
Bathrooms require ceiling lights, mirror lights, exhaust fans, and properly isolated sockets for geysers and grooming appliances.
Key Electrical Design Rules for Homes in Kerala
- All outdoor lights should be controlled from common areas, not bedrooms
- Separate circuits must be provided for:
- Split AC units
- EV chargers
- Inverter
- Split AC units
- Spare conduits should be planned for future needs
- DB must be placed in a safe, visible, and accessible location
